Water Lily Pond

Description

A field of lily pads spreads across still, indigo-blue water, their green broken only by a scatter of reeds along the shoreline and a scatter of unopened buds. At the center, one white water lily has opened fully, its petals catching the day's last cool light while everything around it stays closed. The water holds a faint mirror of sky and grass, quiet enough that the whole surface reads as glass.

Artist Statement

Most of this pond is patience — dozens of pads and buds waiting for their moment, closed up and green, indistinguishable from one another. Then there's the one bloom that opened anyway, small and white against all that stillness, asking to be looked at without demanding it.

I framed this loosely rather than tightly on the flower itself, because the real subject isn't the bloom — it's the contrast between it and everything around it that hasn't opened yet. The blue cast of the water does a lot of the work here too; it's not a color correction so much as an honest read of the light at that hour, cool and low, making the one white flower read even brighter by comparison.
