From high above Zion Canyon, the switchback road unspools like a single unbroken thought — folding back on itself again and again as it drops toward the canyon floor, dwarfed on all sides by sandstone walls that have been carved, not built. Morning haze still clings to the deeper folds of the canyon, softening the far cliffs to violet while the near walls hold their full, sunlit color. The road is the only human mark in the frame, and it reads less like infrastructure than like a path drawn by someone trying to find the gentlest way down through something enormous.

Artist Statement

There's a particular kind of scale you only understand from above — where a two-lane road, wide enough for cars, is reduced to a thread. The Descending Path is about that shift in perspective: standing at the canyon rim and watching a road that felt significant at ground level become almost incidental against the walls of Zion.

The switchbacks are the heart of the image. Each bend is a decision the road had to make — where the rock allowed passage and where it didn't — and together they trace something closer to a river's path than an engineer's line. I wanted the photograph to hold both truths at once: the immensity of the canyon, and the persistence of the thin, curling road that still manages to cross it.

This piece continues a body of work built from Southwest desert light — where haze, distance, and the compression of a long lens turn geology into something almost architectural.
