Description

A single vertical seam of light cuts up through near-total black, sandstone glowing red and orange where it catches reflected sun and fading to violet-grey where it curves out of reach. Near the base, a pale wisp of rock trails off like smoke caught mid-rise. At the top of the channel, a small pocket of white breaks through — the only sign that this narrow corridor of stone eventually opens to sky.

Artist Statement

Of the three slot canyon images from this shoot, this is the one built entirely on verticality. Everything in the frame pulls upward — the channel of light narrowing as it climbs, the pale streak of rock reaching toward the opening like it's trying to escape the dark around it. There's no wide view here, no sense of the canyon as a place you could walk through; it's compressed down to a single rising line of color against black.

I wanted this piece to feel less like a landscape and more like a flame caught in stone — something with motion and direction, even though nothing in the frame is actually moving. Paired with the other two slot canyon images, this one completes the set: one enclosed, one opening to sky, and this one caught in the act of climbing toward the light.
