Last Light, Last Wave
Ocean Sunset — Surf Series
The day burns out in a single band of gold across the water, the sun already gone behind low cloud but still lighting the sky from within. A distant coastline sits as pure silhouette against the color, its ridgeline barely distinguishable from the haze around it. Below, the ocean has gone dark and matte, holding only one narrow path of reflected light — the last of the day's color, laid straight across the water like a closing line.
Artist Statement
This one wasn't the shot I went out for. It's the frame that happens after — the sky and water settling into color once the surfers have paddled in and the light that mattered for the series is already gone. I've learned to keep shooting through that moment instead of packing up, because the ocean doesn't stop being worth watching just because the swimmers have left it.
There's a stillness here that the surf work doesn't have — no motion, no spray, just the horizon and a single thread of gold laid across dark water. It reads, to me, as the exhale after a day spent chasing motion: the same ocean, the same light, but finally holding still.
